Beat Streuli's photos, slide projections and videos made in cities all over the globe, are seducing the viewer with their light which is projected on the faces of the passers-by. He catches the people with his camera while they are hurrying to their destination or just lingering in the streets. He captures their expressions. The composition of the light and shadow in the images together with the colours of the faces and the clothes in their surrounding is reflecting our behaviour in daily life.

'Van der Salm turns his camera on the contemporary and evolving metropolis, but he simultneously - and this is essential to his work - consistently exploits this reality for a different, personal objective. The reality that he encounters encourages its employment, as if it were two-dimensional paint. The camera is not only an optical instrument in this, but an extension of his person: Van der Salm paints with the lens.'

The architectural structures that Danwen Xing photographed are all maquettes made to promote real-estate developments that are being planned in China today. This entire body of work is playful and fictitious, wandering between reality and fantasy. Al the figures in the series are images of the artist, playing different characters. The figures act out of totally imaginative roles as part of different plots and in different spaces. Together the resulting pictures compose the episodes of the urban fiction.
These images represent the state of urban life today. In our childhood, skyscrapers were buildings that we had to raise our head to look at. Now we can imagine our future by bending down to examine tiny models of buildings. This, perhaps, is another image of modern life.
